I have bought the Shake Weight. I've bought this thing and bought INTO this thing because I have a love/hate relationship with my arms. I appreciate what they can do for me but they are also so big that I have to buy shirts that are one size bigger and 3/4 sleeves are my friend. My arms are the only part of my body that I truly contemplate surgery. I have been known to point to my arms and growl. Seriously.
When I first saw the Shake Weight commercial I thought my prayers had been answered. It didn't even occur to me how obscene the commercial was until I saw Ellen's commentary on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kmrFBnrkqg
All I saw was women with the sculpted arms and shoulders that I have NEVER known. Even though I have a gym membership, I thought this was something I could add to my at-home equipment, really giving my arms a boost.
When I told my brother, Anthony, about my purchase he said something that blew my mind, "You know...spot burning your fat is a myth." My brother is 10 years younger than me and knew something that has NEVER occurred to me before: That these machines will not burn fat in the areas they say they will. Am I the only one who bought into these infomercials?!?! I'm thinking the millions of dollars spent on this equipment tell a different story. It's true that you CAN spot build muscle but using a specialized piece of equipment is not going to burn the fat in those areas. What it will do is build muscle underneath the fat so as I'm losing fat, I'll have muscle to uncover.
I guess the reason I've been living in ignorance is I've always heard that building muscle helps burn fat, which is true, but the commercials make you believe that if you work the muscles in certain areas, that's where the fat burn will concentrate. NOT TRUE! When I talked to my go-to trainer, Brittany, about the truth my brother was laying on me she said, "Think of it this way. If you're doing a bicep curl, you're not just sweating on your bicep. The surrounding muscles are also engaged and helping the movement. When you work on your muscles, it burns fat in your entire body but your body decides where it's going to take the fat from." THIS IS GOOD NEWS because we benefit our entire body with the workouts we do!! (Although it can stop taking from my boobs and work on my bloody arms now! Sheesh.) We just have to make purchases with our eyes wide open!
March 19 Note: As soon as I talked to my brother and Brittany I was fully prepared to return the Shake Weight as I hadn't received it yet. I couldn't resist trying it at least once though. I did the DVD workout (which they claim is 6 minutes but the video runs almost 11) and I must say, it was pretty awesome! I take Beginning Toning, a whole body workout, pretty regularly and I must say the Shake Weight really did a burn on my arms that I haven't known before! I really like it so I'm going to keep it! (If you plan to try this yourself, the price is $19.99 but be prepared to be on the phone, literally, for 20 minutes listening to an annoying recorded voice trying to upsell every step of the way. Ridiculous!)
Meaningful Movement: Rested the bod today but did some swaying at the praise and worship concert by Darrell Evans. He's best known for songs like "All I Want Is You" and "I'm Laying Down My Sorrows". A BLESSED night! Thanks to one of my BFFs, Jenny, for getting me there!
