The Guidelines for The Baby Bowl Experiment:

1. The meal has to fit in the bowl, up to the rim. I can, however, go beyond the rim with fruits and vegetables.
2. I can eat whatever I want.
3. I can have more than one bowl of food but I have to wait 20 minutes between each bowl.
4. I have to chew the food as close to a liquid state as possible.
5. Only water.

(For additional information about these guidelines, see Days 2 and 27.)

Day 18 - March 11 - More Eating Pitfalls Identified

In an earlier post I talked about Nostradamus Eating. This is when you've predicted how much you're GOING to eat before you ever sit down to your meal. These past couple of weeks, I've become aware of other ways I catch myself eating and adding needless calories:

-Celebration Eating, which is what I did yesterday: "It's my birthday (anniversary, got a promotion, graduation etc) so I'm going to eat whatever I want."

-Outing Eating: Deciding what you're going to eat at a restaurant even before seeing the menu. There have been a number of times I've gone to a restaurant really only wanting a salad but because it was a wing joint, for example, I ordered chicken wings!

-Mommy Eating: As moms we make food for our kids they don't finish. How many of us have eaten their leftovers AFTER having eaten our own food?

-Tidy Eating: Eating while we put food AWAY! The other day while cleaning up the kitchen and storing dinner in plastic containers, I ate food I didn't plan for!

- Cooking Eating: I have been known to snack WHILE making a meal!

- Avoiding Leftovers Eating: The other day I was making taco salads for Marianne and myself. As we were getting ready to eat I noticed there was about a tablespoon or two of meat left. Not enough to make another salad, I added the leftover meat to mine! Before seeing the leftover meat, I was perfectly happy with the taco salad I'd made!

-Guilty Eating: Do you eat because you don't want to throw food away or you feel you should finish what's on your plate? This is guilty eating.

-"Because It Tastes Good" Eating: There are dishes that I've grown up with that I want to eat BEYOND full - Wu's Beef, Stuffed Pork Tenderloin with herbed butter sauce, Thanksgiving dinner, my mom's spaghetti with garlic bread or any of her Filipino food and roast beef and dill sour cream gravy. These are all so fabulous it's worth the pain of the gain. --This is also why they're called "special occasion" food.

Meaningful Movement: Another rest day

Foods that fit in a baby bowl, Day 18:
-Lenten fast: breakfast
-Chili with crackers
NOTE: I also had a roll and mini scone with this. This was at noon and I hadn't eaten since about 4:30 the previous day. Definitely tough to do a dinner fast, then a breakfast fast. I'll have to keep this in mind.
-Lucky Charms and 2% milk
-1/2 whole wheat pita with homemade hummus (shared with Marianne)
-1 porkchop with dip (soy sauce, vinegar and garlic)
NOTE: I LOVE my baby bowl! This dinner would've previously been THREE porkchops and rice!! I really was good with just one porkchop!
-1/3 bowl apple crisp with Cool Whip
-Lucky Charms and 2% milk

  1. I must have missed this one. I am so on the this taste too good eating! I too am loving my baby bowl eating. I feel like there is some control to it. Still have to work in the meaningful movement, maybe I will look forward to posting something next week. Thanks again Michelle.

  2. There are SO many different ways to add more calories! I've come up with more since this post.

I TOTALLY agree about the control that baby bowl eating gives. It's so nice to have this perfect mix of structure and freedom. (Oxymoron anyone?*g*)
